Standards Based Curriculum Paper
Course: Mathematics 8 Instructor: Ms. E. Brice
Course Description: A disciplined study of real numbers and their properties; algebraic expressions, polynomials, exponents, radicals; algebraic relations and functions; the theory of equations and inequalities with emphasis on how to solve and graph them.
Course Outline:
1. Expressions and Equations (Exponents) and the Number System
2. Functions
3. Expressions and Equations (Linear Equations)
4. Geometry
5. Probability and Statistics
Core Content and Performance Standards:The student demonstrates the Standards for Mathematical Practice:
Required Course Text: Ready Math 8 Mathematics Instruction (2019-2020) with the Practice and Problem Solving workbook.
Required Materials: You should have a 1.5” 3-ring binder with filler paper, dividers, pencils, note cards (any color), a red pen, graph paper, protractor, compass, scientific calculator (TI-30Xa is recommended), and a ruler. You are required to keep a binder for this class. This curriculum handout will be the second item in your binder. All work should be recorded and filed chronologically by date including all tests and quizzes. We will use these when reviewing for quarterly exams and the statewide assessment.
Student Expectations, Progress toward Standards, and Safety Nets: If you are absent the class before a scheduled test, which is usually a review day, you WILL take the test as scheduled. If you are absent from class on the day of a test or quiz, you must take the scheduled make-up within three days during your PE period. I will be available for tutoring during planning by appointment only.
Student Integrity and Decorum: The purpose of discipline is to establish and maintain favorable study conditions and to develop ideals, habits, and skills that make for effective citizenship and self-government. All school rules such as, but not limited to, the dress code, attendance, tardies, and appropriate classroom behavior will be enforced in my class. All classes, with the exception of PE and science, are held within the same pod; there is no reason you should be tardy. If the door is closed for class to begin and you are not inside of the classroom, you will be marked tardy. NO EXCEPTIONS. Please reference the Code of Conduct for a comprehensive list.
Burns students are expected to be active participants in the learning process and uphold ethical standards of academic honesty at all times. Cheating will not be tolerated! Giving or receiving unauthorized help on assignments, tests, or quizzes is cheating and will result in an automatic grade of zero and possibly a referral.
Workload and Assessment:
The state-wide grading scale is as follows:
A: 100-90%
B: 89-80%
C: 79-70%
D: 69-60%
E: 59% and Below
Your nine-weeks grade will be determined using a point system and weighted per MCPSS guidelines. Your grade may include classroom tests, pop quizzes, homework, binder checks, classwork, and a nine-weeks End of Quarter Test (EQT). The EQT is 20% of your total quarter grade. You will also have a cumulative semester exam at the end of each semester.
Homework is given to strengthen and reinforce specific skills. It will be assigned in class and placed on the website. It will be checked for completion and/or accuracy. Expect to have your homework collected regularly and randomly. Late assignments will not be accepted if you are present on the due date. If you are absent, the homework you were assigned when you were last present will be due the day you return. Leaving work at home or in another class are not valid excuses for not having your assignments with you when due. You must make up assignments you miss. It is your responsibility to check for and turn in missed assignments. You have THREE DAYS to turn in assignments due to absences. NO EXCEPTIONS! Any assignments not turned in will result in a zero (0) grade.
Binder checks are completely random audits of assignments and documents, and are worth a quiz grade. Your binder holds the keys to your EQT success and cumulative final at the end of the year. It would be in your best interest to maintain a neat and organized binder.
How your grade is calculated (per MCPSS policy):
Tests 60%
Quizzes 30%
Homework/Classwork 10%
Note: iNOW will round grades, so I will not. For example, you may have an 88.54% and iNOW will round to an 89%. I will not round further to a 90%. You will need to complete all assignments to ensure you get your desired final grade.
Grade Codes Comments:
Z- Absent (student was absent on assigned/due date and has an
opportunity to make up assignment)
NHI- Not Handed In (student was present and did not turn in assignment)
NMU- Not Made Up (student did not complete the makeup work)
L- student turned in, but made no attempt to complete the assignment
DND- Did Not Do (online assignment)
*Each of the above codes results in a zero.
The policies described above may be modified as needed to meet student needs. Any modifications will be promptly communicated to the students. For questions, parents may contact me by e-mail at [email protected], by message through the office, or by appointment through the office.
